Daily Flash Monday the 30th of August We started the day by writing in our sight word journals. we wrote about what our dog could see…if we did not really have a dog it was our pretend dog. Some of us wrote about how the dog could see a dog bone, some said a cat, one person said a bow, amongst some other things. Ask us if we can remember what our dog could see. Next we went through our daily routine of calendar, weather and days in school. We read We are the same, We are different: But we are all Wonderful. We learned how some of us have different colored skin, but it is still skin that holds our bones and muscles in. Some of us have brown eyes, some blue, but we all use our eyes to see, wink and blink. Ask us if we can wink. When the book was over we examined our fingerprints. We all have them but each person’s is very different. We used magnifying glasses to take a closer look. Now we had to trace our handprint, find the right skin tone crayon and color the hand. Then we cut it out. Mrs. Clapp, Mrs. K or Mrs. Collier came over with a stamp pad for us to put our index finger on. We rolled our index finger on our hand and saw our fingerprint appear. We are going to make a classroom community poster out of all our hands. Now it was time for math stations. One station had the counting jars, another had geo-blocks, and yet another had the pattern shapes. the last station had Mrs. Clapp there with her friend Perky the puppy. See if we can remember what we had to do with Perky the puppy (Hint – had to do with her ears and patterns). After lunch and recess we went off to our special class which was music with Mrs. Gates. Music was followed by handwriting. We were introduced to the letter wood building pieces which were brand new. We had to polish them with little pieces of towel. Every now and again Mrs. Clapp would call out the name of a piece and we would have to find it and put it in the location Mrs. Clapp called out. For example, “Up high, down low, left side right side, by your toe.” Snack and centers was fun…we only have one more day with these center choices and then they will change. Ask us which center we went to today and what we did there. Tuesday the 31st of August Today we started out the day by writing in our journal about what a cat could see. Most of us wrote that our cat could see a mouse, some said ribbon, and others said a rat. Ask us to see what we wrote about. On the rug we did the usual kindergarten routine of calendar, attendance and how many days in school. We have added the question of the day to the morning routine. The question for today was “Do you have any pockets?” 14 people had pockets and 6 people did not have pockets. From these results we were able to figure out attendance and tomorrow we will try to do the same thing. We were able to color in another letter on our attendance word poster. We can not wait to turn it into the counselor to see what we get having perfect attendance. Ask us to see if we have any idea what the surprise might be. We read Why Am I Different? The book had characters that were different in some way. For example, one child had a chocolate allergy, another was adopted, and yet another had no television. Ask us to see if we can come up with a way that we are different from everyone else. We started reading the I Can books that we made. We managed to read three and we will continue to read these books throughout the week. We made “Guess Who” posters to hang on our door and we will have the chance to play the guess who game when we have completed any work we have been assigned. After we made the “Guess Who” posters we went to work stations. We played a new build a tower game with Mrs. Clapp. Mrs. Clapp showed us a way to record the designs we made with the pattern shapes. We will get to bring this home tomorrow when the glue is dry. We got to play the Perky Puppy game with our class mates, and count out objects from the counting jar. After lunch and recess we went to special class one which was P.E. We ran and ran and ran. After that we went to our next special class which was Media. We got to pick out new books to bring home. Read them with us for some together time. Since we had two special classes we did not have time to go to centers, so we worked on some of our under construction work and read some books. Tomorrow is our first early dismissal day. We wonder what that will be like. Wednesday the 1st of September As usual we wrote in our sight word journals using the sight words we have been working on, “I” “see” “can” “is” “a” and “my.” We did our attendance, calendar, weather, and day’s in school. We are getting very good at predicting what the color of the number will be tomorrow since we have seen a whole group of ten go up on the hundreds chart. We are also quickly figuring out which bug will come next in our 100 bug count. After our morning routine was over we read The Skin I Live In. This book compared skin tones to various foods and spices. It was a rhyming book and we liked the colorful pictures. Mrs. Clapp told us that we would now be artists. We would be paired up with a friend and we would have to draw them and they would draw us. Ask us to see if we can remember who we got paired up with. Once our portraits were done we brought them to circle and we compared the portrait to the original piece of work…us! Some of them looked pretty funny. We tried to remember all the physical features of the face etc. We went to our special class early today since it is early dismissal. We ended up having media after all. We thought we were having P.E. but there had been a mistake on the schedule. After lunch and recess we played a game called guess my rule. Mrs. Clapp called us up one at a time and the other students had to guess what the rule for being selected to stand up was. For example, one was has short sleeves, has a skirt on, etc. Next we went to work stations for a short while. WE only had two and we switched between the two. This way we would fit in some station work on a short day. All too soon it was time to pack up and go home. See you tomorrow. Art is the special class on that day and Mrs. Clapp said we will be having another kind of art teacher in our class. Thursday the 2nd of September We wrote in our journal using the sight words we have been working on. If we had any work in the under construction bin we worked on that to get it done. Then we went to the rug and we did our morning routine. We used the weather vote to figure out our attendance. We added 3 numbers together, 1, 6, and 13. We found we had 20 students here so we got to…well ask us and we will tell you what we got to do. We read Mmm Cookies, by Robert Munsch. We usually only get to read Mr. Munsch’s stories at the end of the day, but this one actually had something to do with our math lesson. At one of our math stations we had to make a cookie book with a certain number of raisins on it just like in the Robert Munsch story. Another station had us complete our Perky Puppy ear patterns, and yet another had us roll and build. We rolled a die and then built a tower to match the amount rolled. Then we rolled again to build a tower next tot hat one until we had made a wall. Sometimes we ended up with a stair like effect and other times it was a crazy wall. The last station had us constructing designs with pattern blocks. At 10:15 our special guest Lenore Kelner came to our class. She worked on drama skills and reading comprehension through drama. We were asked to act like the characters’ in the story and then infer what we thought they would say to other characters in the story. Mrs. Kelner interviewed us to see if we really understood what the characters were like in the story, this was a test of our comprehension of the story events. After lunch and recess we worked on our handwriting by working with the wooden letter building pieces. We had snack and then our last day with these free choice centers. Tomorrow there will be new centers. We wonder what they will be. P.E tomorrow- Remember those tennis shoes.
