Current Volunteer Opportunities

Project Electives: We'd like to begin planning our first elective sessions that will
begin after October break. Electives are held on Friday afternoons from 1:45-3:00p.m. Elective sessions last for approximately 7 weeks per session.

Past electives classes have included topics such as Swedish culture, gymnastics,
Greatest Detectives, Journaling, Robotics,Paper making, Spanish, Yearbook, Photography, and Basketball. Parents who would like more information about the program and would like to lead or co-lead an elective, should contact Kim Collins at kscollins@smcps.org.

Fall Walk: October 2, 2010 Volunteers are needed to assist in our Fall Walk!  This is one of our top fundraisers for the year and we need many volunteers to assist. This is a great opportunity for families to work together as well. We love having the whole family pitch in together.  To sign up to volunteer, please contact Julia Nichols at juliaandjeff@yahoo.com.

FUNDRAISING:  Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising events throughout the school year.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Cynthia Chan at kchanfamily@aol.com

 On-Going Volunteer Opportunuties:

Copy Room
Help make copies or laminate for teachers in the Teacher Work Room (108). Requests are turned in by teachers for our volunteers to complete.

Recess and Lunch Duty
Work with a staff member during lunch to help monitor the lunch room. We always need help-especially when it comes time to sort food in composting and recycling containers.

Garden
We always need help with weeding, watering, and planting.

Community Gathering
If you have a special interest or hobby, please come share it with our students.

 Volunteer Screening:

All volunteers are required to wear their SMCPS volunteer photo ID when volunteering!

If you applied last year you do not need to apply again.

All volunteers must complete the Volunteer Screening Form. These forms are available in the main office. Forms must be filled out and submitted. After approval volunteers are responsible for getting their photo identification badge from the SMCPS.
You must at least have a temporary volunteer status to volunteer in the school. Please plan accordingly as this process does take time.

Approved registered volunteers, can have their ID made Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am – 3 pm at the Department of Safety and Security, located on Rte. 5 behind Banneker Elementary.  (Must bring photo ID to complete the process.)

Parents MUST have completed this process to volunteer in the building and on field
trips.  Questions?  Please contact Monica Jaster at 301.863.9585 or mhjaster@smcps.org.
