Message from Mrs. Summers regarding homework:
Dear Evergreen Families,
As you know, Evergreen Elementary is a Green School. We are extremely proud of the fact that we achieved LEED gold status in the fall of 2010, which is the leading-edge system for certifying the greenest performing buildings in the world. In June of 2010, we received Maryland Green Schools Certification. We are committed to creating a school community that will demonstrate environmentally responsible behavior for our children. Through this modeling of excellent practices, the children in our community will learn to be good stewards of the resources around them. Our school and our community have always been very supportive of our efforts in working to maintain an “earth friendly” learning and working environment for our students and staff.
As a result of a myriad of budget challenges, along with the desire to move our students into 21st Century working and learning expectations, we have decided that homework activities will include internet resources. Monthly grade level newsletters will include a list of internet resources that are available to students to practice skills that are aligned with the College and Career Ready standards taught in the classroom. Please take the time each month to read the grade level newsletter posted on our school website so that you are well informed of the content being covered and the resources available to your student.
Teachers have the ability to review a report that indicates the number of times each week a student practices on these websites at home. This report also indicates the amount of time your child spends on the website and mastery level of particular objectives. Teachers can and will use this information to plan future lessons and determine understanding of content covered in class.
Additionally, online resources provide choice and flexibility to families; allowing parents the ability to adjust the time spent on homework to be based upon their child’s needs and family schedule.
Homework is great practice for all children and is also a wonderful way to reinforce learning that is taking place in the classroom. However, we are moving to less paper/pencil and more opportunities to practice skills through educational web based programs. All students at Evergreen should read every night and make use of the online homework resources as directed by the teacher. Individual grade level teams will assign additional homework and projects when teachers have decided that it will advance the spirit of learning, curiosity and inquiry among students. Homework will be checked for completion and used as a diagnostic tool to determine if re-teaching or additional practice in the classroom is needed. Completion of homework can help your child’s grade and enhance their understanding of the curriculum.
Keep in mind that some students need more practice than others. As parents, you know what is best for your child. Many parents have strong feelings regarding how children should spend their free time after the school day. The use of web based at home resources are a great way for parents to be partners in their child’s learning by deciding on the appropriate amount of time spent on homework. Conversations with your child will help them build the life skill of assessing their understanding of the material, and deciding how much practice is necessary. Keep in mind that using HAC for students in grades 3-5 is a great way to stay abreast of your child’s progress in each subject area and determine if more practice at home is needed.

Fall School Picture Day - September 17th
Every student will have their picture taken for the yearbook. If you would like to order pictures, order envelopes will be going home prior to picture day. If you forget to send in your envelope on picture day you may send it in the next day.
Volnteers that have already been trained do not need to go through training again. Evergreen welcomes volunteers to begin the week of September 15th. Please contact your child’s teacher to make arrangements.
If you are not a registered volunteer you MUST attend training, please see the dates and times below:
We are participating in Schoolstore.com again this year. SchoolStore.com is an online shopping mall with over 400 merchants. When your family and friends make everyday purchases from their favorite merchants, our school earns money.
Packets will be sent home shortly. Information regarding schoolstore.com and the program details can be found on the "Announcement" page.
