Finish Line Programs offered during the day:

Finish Line-A half-hour small group time offered 3 times a week for 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders. This will be some type of intervention or enrichment, specifically chosen for your child based upon their needs. They may have a different teacher for this set time, which will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This will start during the second quarter. jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Sunshine Math- Sunshine Math is an enrichment program created to help children become successful students of mathematics. It is not intended to replace any aspect of the classroom curriculum. It is designed to teach responsibility and to help students develop problem-solving skills, and critical and creative thinking. This is an optional program for students. It is available to any child who wants to try, regardless of prior success in mathematics. jdsmith@smcps.org
 
- This program develops advanced mathematical thinking that is aligned to the NCTM standards for math and the Maryland State Curriculum. It can be used with students in grades 3 - 5. Students work in groups to solve logic puzzles. jdsmith@smcps.org  dmkirkland@smcps.org 
 
William & Mary-This is an enrichment program offered in grades 2 - 8. Students will respond to higher level literature through discussion and writing. This program involves a lot of higher level & critical thinking. jdsmith@smcps.org                dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Junior Great Books-This program is offered at all grade levels and is designed to increase students’ ability to discuss literature and promotes higher level thinking.   The program focuses on reading comprehension and critical thinking.   jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
SOAR to Success- This is an intervention to assist students with reading comprehension. Students will learn comprehension strategies through reading text and reciprocal teaching. They then should be able to carry these strategies over into all reading they do.    jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Read Naturally-This intervention is a way to help increase students’ fluency when reading. It focuses on repeated readings of text and timing themselves to reach a certain goal. The students graph their progress on each passage they read.    jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Six Minute Solution-This is another fluency intervention that focuses on students rereading and monitoring each others’ progress. This program also has a focus on comprehension, as well. jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Descartes Cove-Developed for middle school students by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY), this program is available to highly able students in grades 4 - 8. The software program focuses on the development of advanced math and pre-algebraic skills. cedyson@smcps.org
 
Fundations-This phonemic awareness program will be taught whole group in Kindergarten, first, and second grade. There will also be intervention groups using Fundations through third grade. There is a focus on phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling.    jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
REWARDS-This program helps students learn to decode multisyllabic words. It is for students in the 4th and 5th grade that need some extra help with all aspects of reading, especially reading larger words. There is also a fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension component, as well.      jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Primary Talent Development (PTD) – This program is offered to all students PK – 2. Explicit instruction in seven achievement behaviors: Communicative, Creative, Inquisitive, Resourceful, Leadership, Perceptive, Persistent. jdsmith@smcps.org    dmkirkland@smcps.org
 
Before/After School:
Math Challenge- This program will prepare a selected group of fourth and fifth graders for the 2010 SMECO Mathematics Challenge. Participants were invited to try out for the team. jdsmith@smcps.org
 
FLOW- Future Leaders of the World is a mentoring program offered one day a week after school. Students are paired with mentors who assist them with academics and the development of leadership skills. jlfendt@smcps.org
 
ROBOTICS- This program provides an opportunity for students to be involved in a STEM robotics activity. Students meet weekly to research a present problem or a solution to fix a problem within the Chesapeake Bay. jdsmith@smcps.org   sewaters@smcps.org 
 
SLAG-This stands for Scholars, Leaders, and Athletes & Gentlemen. This is a group for 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade boys and focuses on instilling good character traits. They will work on homework, play sports and learn about how to be gentlemen. They will also have a focus this year on being environmentally friendly. cedyson@smcps.org
 
GALS- This stands for Girls that are Athletes, Leaders, & Scholarly. This is a group for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls and focuses on instilling positive self-esteem and leadership qualities. They will work on homework, play sports and learn how to be good characters in and out of school.  srszczyglowski@smcps.org   dmcoyne@smcps.org
