Welcome to Great Mills Baseball! The Baseball program is one of the most successful programs in the history of Great Mills High School. We are at or near the top in SMAC, Regional and State Championships. We are proud of this successful tradition. We play in the most competitive baseball conference in the state of Maryland which has had a team in the State Championship game for 12 of the last 13 years. We are one of the few sports at Great Mills that has posted a winning record over the past two years. We have sent over a dozen players to the college ranks and currently have five collegiate players in school. This success can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the players and coaches, as well as, continued support from the parents and community. Any student who becomes part of this program is expected to do everything to continue this record of success. We expect great things from our players and expect them to take pride in the fact that they have been selected to be part of this very successful program. The continued success of our program depends on the players accepting this challenge and responsibility seriously and putting forth their best effort every day. We look forward to another successful year which will only happen with the continued hard work by players and coaches and parent support.

Coaching Philosophy, by Steve Wolfe
There are many reasons why students should participate in high school sports in general and Baseball in particular. I believe that baseball provides a great opportunity to teach important lessons of life. It has the benefit of teaching team concepts, but includes individual accomplishment and it teaches how to balance the two. It gives players the opportunity to experience success and teaches how to properly handle failure. I have set the following goals as a coach:

  • 1. Teach good fundamentals
  • 2. Develop team unity
  • 3. Create a positive experience
  • 4. Get players ready for the next level of baseball
  • 5. Get players to reach their full potential
  • 6. develop a competitive program
  • 7. Stay current on trends in baseball

Equipment Needs:

  • 1. Glove
  • 2. Bat
  • 3. Spikes - metal is acceptable

Financial Items:

  • *Players buy their game socks and game hat
  • *Players are expected to participate in fund raising efforts

Criteria for Team Selection:

The 5 areas the coaches use for selecting players are as follows:

  • 1. Academics - 2.0 GPA minimum
  • 2. Attitude - Must be positive
  • 3. Adaptability - Be Coachable
  • 4. Action - Willing to make the effort to change and improve
  • 5. Ability - Must have sound fundamentals and understanding of the game of baseball.

These items are listed in their importance and priority! Please pay extra attention to the fact that the ability is last on the list.
