Messages from teachers about the importance of French:
I received this interesting email about the importance of choosing French as a language of study. I hope you will take a moment to read it and think about it when advising students what language to choose during registration in the coming months.
...A little over a year ago, an Arabic instructor from the Defense Language Institute came to talk to our students. After she made a presentation about the Defense department's language program and possible careers in the government using languages, she opened up a Q & A session. A student asked "what is the best language to take?" and her reply shocked a lot of us. She said, "First of all, remember that whatever is the 'best' language right now probably won't be by the time you get out of college. Second, remember that 'best' is relative to what you want to do with it. But for the government's needs, in no particular order, the languages that we need are: Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Farsi, and French." A student of Spanish asked, "Not Spanish?" and the answer was, "Only if you want to join the DEA." When pressed about the usefulness of French, she said, "You ever hear of Africa? Ever hear of Algeria? Morocco? The people there often prefer to speak French to Arabic. So yes, French is considered a critical language for the Defense Department."
...My son likes to remind me that he uses French fairly often as an engineering student who is interested in alternative energy sources and other aspects of mechanical engineering.
