Girls Soccer

Head Coach: Amy Herndon
Assistant Coaches: Dean Muders and Ashley Riemer

The girls soccer team is looking for dedicated athletes that are willing to work hard and want to have fun! Athletic players with little or no prior soccer experience have made the team in years past, so if you are at all interested, don’t hesitate.

Coach Talk:  "The aim of the coaching staff is to extend education beyond the classroom to athletics, promote good sportsmanship at all times, and to develop responsible team players. As a team, we aim to improve each season."

TRYOUTS:
Begin on Saturday, August 15. Two mandatory sessions a day until school starts: 8-10:30am and 4-6pm on Saturday, and then 6:30-8am and 4-6pm on weekdays until school starts. Come prepared to play with running shoes and any soccer gear you have (cleats, shinguards).  You must have the forms mentioned below.
Practice will be daily from 3-5:30 after school starts.

Requirements:

  • All athletes must have a minimum of 2.0 GPA from their previous school year 4th marking period.
  • A completed physical examination from your physician, stating that you are cleared to participate in athletics. Failure to have this completed prior to August 15 will prevent players from trying out until the physical is completed by your doctor, so it is recommended you SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT NOW for sometime in early summer. Bring this with you the first day of tryouts.
  • A completed athletic participation packet. All forms available from the school front office, and are also mandatory for participation in tryouts. Bring this with you the first day of tryouts.

HOW TO PREPARE:

  • Have your physical exam completed before the summer activities begin so that you can participate!  New rules require players to have completed physicals from their physician to also participate in summer activities that are sponsored by the school or coaching staff.  Schedule these appointments early!!!
  • Stay active over the summer by jogging, participating in other sports and activities, and by playing as much soccer as possible.
  • Practice individual skills as much as possible – dribbling around your yard, passing with friends and family or against a wall, trapping balls thrown into the air, and juggling! Focus on improving both feet and all body surfaces. Doing these activities for just 10-15 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week will let you shine for tryouts!
  • Check out this website for demo videos of exercises and skills you can work on at home. Not only does this site show videos of the drills, but it provides detailed instructions for proper techniques also: http://www.insidesoccer.com/learn_it/players/you_and_the_ball (General Disclaimer: Information provided on the web site carries no express or implied warranties as to accuracy, timeliness, or appropriateness for a particular purpose: in addition, SMCPS disclaims owner responsibility for content errors, omission or infringing material and disclaims owner liability for damages associated with user reliance on information provided at the site.)
  • Participate in local camps and activities offered over the summer. We'll be holding conditioning and skills sessions twice a week throughout the summer - see below for details.  There will also be a local evening camp from July 29-Aug 12, each weekday evening from 6-8pm at Chancellors Run Park. Email me for more information.
  • Let me know how I can help. I am more than willing to go out of my way for players who want to put in the effort! I can provide you with specific activities to work on to improve in a specific area (speed, touch, left foot, headers, etc). Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for any type of help!

GMHS Girls Soccer Summer Strength & Conditioning Sessions
When: Tues & Thurs, June 30 – July 23
Time: 5-7pm
Where: Lancaster Park , Field #5
Cost: Free!
What to Bring: Water and a soccer ball, if you have one

The objective of the conditioning is to strengthen and improve balance and coordination through agility exercises, and will not be strictly focused on running. Many incoming freshman, along with other athletes who haven’t played in a while, experience injuries and “over-use” pains in transitioning to high school play due to the daily practices. The conditioning sessions are designed to ease that transition and to give the team a head start going into the fall season.

This will be our second year offering the summer conditioning.  The plan is for these sessions to run for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the activities we'll be doing that day. Following that, I'd encourage everyone to stick around for another 45 minutes to an hour for pick up games, or for structured skill sessions with a guest coach. Due to state rules, I am not allowed to give any soccer specific instruction to returning players out of season. However, I have enlisted guest coaches to come to at least one of these sessions each week to work on skills and techniques, following the conditioning. I also hope to take that time to work with the new incoming players myself, as the state guidelines only refer to returning players.

Players are expected to come to tryouts in shape and ready to play! So if you’re not doing it on your own, you should plan to attend these sessions. Make sure you are on the email distribution for updates.

We typically run one fundraiser each season. Fundraiser money supports the local mini-camp for all GMHS girls soccer players and buys the program training equipment, bags, etc.
