GMHS Mission Statement
Great Mills High School, with a long and notable tradition of service to a socially diverse student population and community, empowers all students to respect individual differences, to become responsible and productive citizens, and to become life-long learners. These goals are achieved in partnership with families and the community at large by providing innovative instruction based upon individual needs within a safe and caring environment.
| Great Mills High School is a comprehensive public high school of 1,793 students in grades 9-12. It serves the community at the southern end of St. Mary's County, at the confluence of the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers and Chesapeake Bay. The area is a mixture of rural and suburban communities. Many of the families are employed by the U.S. Navy at the Naval Warefare Test Center, government contractors, St. Mary's college of Maryland or involved in traditionally agricultural and water-related businesses. The ethnic population of the school reflects that of the community: 63% Caucasian, 31% African American, 6% Other. |
Accreditation |
Great Mills High School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Maryland State Department of Education. GMHS grading system uses single, non-differentiating, 4-point system. An exception to this is Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which are weighted. Class rank is determined by using cumulative grade point averages while in high school (as well as to determine valedictorian and salutatorian). |
Grading A=90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 0-59 | Standard Certificate 4 3 2 1 0 | |
We encourage every member of our Great Mills High School community (Students, Staff, Families and Alumni) to "get involved and make a difference"...
We sponsor several school wide events annually to benefit our community.
