Great Mills High School Theatre Department is a member of the Educational Theatre Organization, which sponsors troupes of The International Thespian Society. Established in 1929, the organization is named after Thespis, the ancient Greek who, according to legend, stepped out from the chorus and became the first actor. The Society’s guiding principle is a dedication to excellence in educational theatre. The International Thespian Society honors those students who do theatre well.

In order to become inducted, a student must work one hundred hours of dedicated hard work on theatre productions and activities. Thespian points have to be earned in more than one capacity in order to qualify. A person needs to earn their points by doing more than just acting. They might help with make-up, props, costumes, or set construction

Once a person has paid their dues, (a one time fee to ITS), he or she is a member. With membership, they get an ID card, a pin, a certificate, and a year’s subscription to DRAMATICS Magazine. The magazine is renewable if the student wants it.

At graduation, Thespian Society members get to walk wearing a cord that indicates their membership and a special seal is placed on their diplomas. When a member has earned sixty thespian points, they letter in theatre at Great Mills High School. We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication our members demonstrate. When they letter, it is an honor and well deserved. This year, the Honor Thespians will wear sashes and the members will wear a cord of blue and gold at graduation. The GMHS troupe of Thespian Society will be inducting a number of new members at the end of the year. We will also look forward to seeing who lettered to become Honor Thespians. This is no small achievement!
