Art/Parent Letter

August 26, 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year! Thank you for your support and encouragement of your child in his/her study of art. Your combined effort in appreciating the arts will reap lifelong rewards. Art allows a person to express their feelings and ideas creatively to the world. Continued participation in artistic activities in and out of school is always encouraged.

In order to prepare your child for the tasks he/she will confront, the following School Standards will be initiated:
Act in a safe and healthy way.
Treat all property with respect.
Take responsibility for learning and behavior.
Respect the rights and needs of others.

The classroom discipline plan follows the consequences that correspond with grade level behavior management procedures all ready in place.

Students in grades kindergarten – five will be taught on an A/B week schedule. Students will receive 45 minutes of instruction per week. PreK will come to art on Tuesday of A week. Students in grades three-five will receive semester grades in the second and fourth marking periods. At the end of the school year, students will receive a final grade. Students in grades kindergarten-2 will receive assessments in the second and fourth marking periods, and a final assessment at the end of the school year.

Students in grades three-five will be assessed on their active participation in class activities and completion of projects. 60% of their grade will be based on these activities and projects. 20% of the grade will be based on class participation which includes discussions, working in cooperative groups, and critiques. The last 20% of their grade will be based on quizzes and tests on information covered in our class discussions. Students in grades K-2 will be assessed on their participation in class and progression of basic art skills.

I am looking forward to another great school year. It is, as always, a privilege to be allowed to teach your children and have them grow in the arts. Thank you once again for your continued support of Lettie Dent’s fine arts programs. We couldn’t do it without you!
                                                                                    Sincerely,
