Physical Education HealthWelcome to the Physical Education and Health department page! The Physical Education and Health Department at LHS has had an enjoyable and productive year so far. Physical Education and athletic conditioning courses have covered many fitness and exercise concepts as well as a wide variety of sport skills. At the beginning of the semester students participated in physical fitness testing. The fitness testing included: partial curl-ups which measure muscular endurance, the shuttle run which measures your agility, right angle push-up which measure your muscular strength, the sit and reach test which measures flexibility, and the mile run which measures cardio-respiratory endurance. Testing at the beginning of the semester allowed students to see which areas of fitness they excelled in and which areas that they needed to improve in. So, throughout this semester students can concentrate on improving their weak areas. Testing at the end of the semester will show students how much they improved. Some of the sports that are being covered include: tennis, softball, football, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, and also weight training. Athletic conditioning students are also working hard towards their fitness goals this semester. Students tested various aspects of their strength and fitness during the first few weeks of school. Students will retest in these areas throughout the year to see how much they have improved. Many students have seen substantial strength gains since the beginning of the year. Students have also learned various concepts of exercise physiology. Thus students are now more familiar as to how the body responds to exercise. This semester’s health classes are also going very well. Many topics will be covered throughout the semester. The topics include: Introduction into health and wellness, stress, alcohol, tobacco, first aid, drugs, eating disorders, family life and human development, and sexual harassment. During the tobacco education Unit, students were able to see first hand how the lungs are affected by tobacco smoke. Students were shown actual lungs, one pair that were normal, and another pair that had been damaged by tobacco smoke. As the lungs were inflated, students could see the performance differences in the two sets of lungs. Health is proving to be a fun learning experience for both teachers and students this semester. The health and physical education staff is looking forward to fun and educational year. It is our hope that knowledge acquired in health, physical education and athletic conditioning will lead to students to the goal of living a healthy productive life and a life full of physical activity. |
