Online Resources

Piney Point Elementary School students have access to three online databases at school and at home. The three databases are: SIRS Discoverer, SIRS Knowledge Source, and World Book Online.

All three databases require a user name and password in order to use them at home. Please contact the media center for that information. Click on the links below to access the databases.

Please do not share the user name and password by posting them on the Internet.

SIRS Discoverer - a general reference database for children in grades 1-9 with full-text articles and images that are selected from thousands of domestic and international publications.  Features include: Current Events – full-text articles and graphics on timely domestic and international events; The World Almanac for Kids; Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia; activities such as science experiments, craft projects, writing activities and more; biographies of every U.S. president and other notable people; fiction articles; country facts; maps of the world; student workbooks; Research Strategy Worksheet; Educator’s Guide; and more.

SIRS Knowledge Source - a comprehensive online database portal providing students and their parents 24/7 access to the best reference materials!  SIRS is ideal for research papers, homework help, current events, debate topics, statistics, personal interests, photographs, graphics, maps, charts, and more.  SIRS provides relevant, credible information.  Websites are carefully selected and screened with no popup ads.

World Book Online - more than an encyclopedia!  Of course students may type in a topic and search the encyclopedia, but there are many more features including Today in History, Behind the Headlines, a dictionary, an atlas, and a really cool look at history in Surf the Ages where students can surf imaginary websites from throughout history.  Also, a Spanish version is available!
