Ridge Elementary

Green Team News

The Green News 2011 - 2012

Over the past two years Ridge Elementary has been working hard to become a Maryland Certified Green School. This year we will be submitting our application highlighting the improvements and projects we’ve done to become a more environmentally aware school.

This year we have been offered another unique opportunity. A local oyster grower Chesapeake Fresh Oyster Co. has offered Ridge Elementary students the opportunity to see firsthand an Oyster Restoration Project and a chance to learn about raising and caring for oysters.

The Chesapeake Fresh Oyster Co. is also offering Ridge Families, with a pier on any tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, a chance to purchase (offset by a tax credit from the state) a float seeded with baby oysters. This will give families the ability to help in the restoration of the Bay and give their children an added learning experience.   If you or someone you know is interested in this project, please look for more information on the back. For every float sold, the Chesapeake Fresh Oyster Co. will donate $50.00 to the school to support our Green School effort.

Finally, there will be an afterschool Green School Meeting on October 26, 2011 at 4:30, for anyone interested in helping with our Green School Project.

Update - Ridge Elementary captures the SMCPS Energy Flag THREE times this school year!!
Ridge Elementary has captured the St. Mary’s County Public Schools’ Energy Flag. During the month of December, Ridge Elementary was able to conserve over 7300kw of electricity as compared the previous December. This is savings of about $1000.00.   Congratulations to everyone for their conservation efforts, but especially our great Green Team who work so hard every day to make our school a little greener.

Our Ridge Elementary Green Team is off to a great start this year. We have 16 new members, who have been doing a wonderful job emptying the recycling bins, every Tuesday and Thursday, and making sure we are conserving electricity in the classroom. The children have also made beautiful posters which can be seen hanging all around the school. They have come up with some wonderful ideas for Green projects including a butterfly garden and rain barrel project. We are in the process of finalizing plans and gathering donations for these projects and will keep everyone updated on their progress.

The Ridge After School Environmental Club is now in full swing. The children have been busy helping to weed our existing gardens and planting tulips. They are also making Toad Houses, for the gardens, to give our amphibian friends a nice new home.

Finally, for the second year in a row, Ridge Elementary has been recognized by Saint Mary’s County Public Schools for conserving 5% or more electricity than we did the previous year. Way to go Ridge !!!!
