Developing Social Communication Skills in Individuals with Autism
Thursday, March 30, 2017
The St. Mary’s County Public Schools Partners for Success Resource Center for Families and Schools will present a workshop for parents and teachers of students who receive special education services called Developing Social Communication Skills in Individuals with Autism on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Board of Education Meeting Room, 23160 Moakley Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650.
Social communication refers to all of the skills needed when using language to communicate and engage in conversations with others. Social communication requires one to understand and use non-verbal communication skills, which is typically difficult for individuals with autism.
Dr. Angela Bollich, neuropsychologist from The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children’s National Health System, will present strategies to help individuals with autism develop and improve their social communication skills.
This workshop is free, but registration is required. To register, please contact Susan Shannon at email@example.com or call 301-863-4069.
Standards Based Report Cards
St. Mary’s County Public Schools formed a report card committee in 2015 and included representation from every elementary school in the county. The committee revised the pre-K – grade 2 Standards Based Report Card to reflect recent curriculum changes, which was successfully implemented this school year.
The work of the committee continues as we focus on creating a Standards Based reporting system for grades 3-5. We recognize the need to provide ongoing professional development for our staff, as well as the need to educate and communicate with families in order to prepare for the transition.
We are committed to a successful implementation and, therefore, we will gather feedback and provide training during the 2017-18 school year and begin implementation for 3rd grade during the 2018-19 school year. Standards Based Report Cards for 4th and 5th grades will follow in consecutive school years.
Please contact me if you would like additional information about Standards Based Report Cards. Town Creek Elementary will have various options for parents throughout this process to keep you informed.
