Angela Funya has been the Education Director of Chesapeake Public Charter School since 2008. After the Maryland Charter School law passed in 2003, a group of dedicated professionals, parents, and community members joined together to form the Chesapeake Public Charter School, of which Ms. Funya was a founding member.  Prior to becoming the Education Director, she served as the chair of the Chesapeake Charter School Alliance governing board.  She believes that education should not be one-size-fits-all, but tailored to the needs of the individual child.  Her work with teachers in curriculum planning for CPCS is based on current research in neuroscience and evolves yearly through a process called scrolling.  This guides the students to engage individually and collaboratively in purposeful learning that promotes both the growth of mind and contribution to the community.  Through the lens of the arts and environmental literacy, students explore complexity, diverse perspectives, and various interdisciplinary ways to grapple with a problem.  Not all learning takes place within the four walls of a classroom and most learning happens in the “squiggle,” as students find their way to an understanding, a product, a work of art or a solution to real-world problems. Her ideal wish for the students she serves at CPCS is that the whole child - their social, emotional, physical, and academic health - is at the center of every daily interaction. Ms. Funya’s own three now adult children are a fine product of the CPCS adventure, each in their own right, and are the inspiration for her work.
