Students will explore medical assisting professions and prepare to work in a variety of healtcare occupations.  This course will provide sutdents an opportunity to learn a variety of healthcare skills, such as: patient health history intake/update, taking vital signs, EKG lead placement, phlebotomy, instrument sterilization, room disinfection, treatment room set-up and tear down, procedure insurance coding, receiving and recording patient payments, and scheduling various patient appointments.  Students will travel, during their class time, to the local hospital, nursing center, and doctor offices.  At the end of this two year course, students will have the opporutnity to accumulate over 160 hands-on clinical hours.  This class uses project and problem-based learning and classroom/lab instgruction as well as field trip experiences focusedon healthcare professions.

Prerequisites

This program prefers students to have Grade 9 Mathematics and Science (Bio preferred) with a C or better.  Drug testing and background checks are required for clinical experiences with Medstar.

Year 1 = 2 periods
