During the first year of this program, students will be introduced to HVAC terminology, trade-related mathematics, and basic tools. Students will gain knowledge of sheet metal fabrication procedures, the design of air distribution systems, copper soldering and brazing procedures. Students will also gain experience using ferrous metals, plastic piping practices, basic electricity, and control circuitry. Students will learn the basics of an HVAC system and the theory of operations.
In the second year of the program, students will learn how to use diagnostic tools, meters, and gauges for the successful restoration of malfunctioning equipment. Students will also learn EPA requirements, which include refrigerant recovery/evacuation/charging procedures for HVAC equipment. In addition, students will be introduced to accessories and optional equipment such as electronic/ultra-violet air cleaners, humidifiers/de-humidifiers, thermostats, and other air purifying equipment. Second year students will gain a deeper knowledge of mathematics, terminology, and tools introduced during the first year of the program. Students will apply their knowledge and skills by participating in the student-built house project.
